Chris Sanigar
Chris boxed as an amateur 56 times for Empire
ABC, Bristol. At the height of his amateur career Chris reached the ABA finals in 1977 and represented England on 3 occasions. In 1978 Chris moved to London and turned professional under the management of the late George Francis. George was one of the top trainers in the world and had world title success with John Conteh, Cornelius Boza Edwards , John Mugabi and Frank Bruno. Chris had 31 pro fights and the highlight of his professional career was winning the Southern Area Light Welterweight Title of Great Britain against Sid Smith. During his career Chris was a much traveled fighter boxing in France, Italy, Zimbabwe, Zambia (twice) and Australia. During his amateur and professional career Chris shared the ring with some of boxing’s greats including World Champions Lloyd Honeyghan, Terry Marsh, Najib Daho and also British favourites Sylvester Mittee, Winston Spencer, Rocky Kelly and Dave McCabe. Chris retired in 1984 and returned to Bristol to train boxers at his former amateur club Empire ABC.
In 1989 Chris was granted a professional boxing manager/trainer license. The first boxer Chris signed was Kingswood’s Ross Hale. Ross went on to win the British and Commonwealth Light Welterweight Titles here at the Colston Hall in Bristol on 25th May 1994. This was the first British title fight to be staged in the city and Ross was the first boxer to win the British Title from the West Country. During this time the Bristol Boys stable emerged to become one of the strongest teams of boxers in the country. Chris’s next champion was Dean Francis who won the British and European Super Middleweight Titles. Stapleton’s Glenn Catley, whom Chris had supervised since he was 14 years of age at Empire ABC went on to become British Middleweight Champion and then reached the pinnacle of a boxer’s career in May 2000 winning the WBC World Super Middleweight Championship. Glenn was voted British Boxer of the Year 2000 by the British Boxing Board of Control. In 2004 Chris promoted two of Audley Harrison's fights in Bristol and London. Bristol Boys had there fourth British Champion when Scott Dann won the Middleweight Title. Scott became the first Plymouth Boxer to win a British Title since 1923 and the first ever to box for the title in his home town. In February 2006 Scott Dann and Bristol's Lee Haskins both won Commonwealth Titles.
